The Heart of Racing drivers Mario Farnbacher (Germany) and Alex Riberas (Spain) finished 12th in GTD in today’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Continental Tire Road Race Showcase run at Road America.
Starting from pole position on the GTD grid, Riberas was able to lead the race right up to the handoff to teammate Farnbacher. The young German returned to the fray and then had to come back into the pits six laps later so the team could fix a brake pedal issue. When exiting the pit lane, the IMSA officials reported that he did not stop as there was a red light at pit exit. This resulted in a penalty relegating the team back in the field for a 12th place finish.
“The result is disappointing for us,” Riberas said. “We started the week not so great. The team turned it around and we were able to get the pole position in qualifying. We led the first segment of the race. Everything was looking good, we got the penalty and that really hurt us. We will fight another day. We are now focused on the Tequila Patron North American Endurance Championship.”
“Alex did a good job at the start of the race,” Farnbacher said. “He was able to lead the race. He handed off to me and then something happened with the brake pedal and we had to pit early. Then we got the penalty, which I am not sure about and that pretty much was our race. A tough day. But this team will come back strong at Virginia International Raceway in three weeks.”
“Alex had a good start to the race leading 24 laps,” Alex Job, team owner, said. “Mario then had an issue with the brake pedal that caused an out of sequence pit stop and then the penalty when leaving the pits. This track is so long track position is everything. That kind of mistake really hurts.”
The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will travel to Virginia International Raceway for the Michelin GT Challenge to run August 26-28.
