Rising star Harry King maintained his bid for a second successive Porsche Carrera Cup GB title on a challenging weekend of racing at Oulton Park.
The current Porsche GB Junior driver headed into the weekend in positive mood having topped the times in pre-event testing at the wheel of his Team Parker Racing-run car, but would be left with work to do after an issue in qualifying left him in an unrepresentative sixth place on the grid.
Undeterred, Harry set about making up places when the opening race of the weekend got underway on Saturday afternoon and he soon found himself fighting for the podium places with Will Martin and Kiern Jewiss.
Battling ahead of Jewiss, Harry would take the flag in fourth place but was promoted into third by virtue of a time penalty for Dan Cammish for being out of position at the start.
Sadly for Harry, he would be handed a two place penalty after the race for an incident with Jewiss, which dropped him down to sixth spot after Cammish’s penalty was also overturned.
Missing out on the reverse grid, Harry avoided a spinning Lorcan Hanafin on lap one to find himself running fifth place when the safety car was deployed to remove two stricken cars from the circuit.
On the restart, Harry found himself running behind Martin and Cammish on track and took a watching brief as the pair squabbled ahead before seeing his chance to make a move on lap eleven. At one stage running three wide, Harry nipped ahead of Cammish at Knickerbrook and then got alongside Martin on the run up Clay Hill before being forced onto the grass, with Harry backing out of the move to avoid a potential incident.
Slotting in behind his rival, Harry would remain in fourth spot through to the finish and he ends the weekend sitting 15 points off the championship lead heading to Knockhill in two weeks time.
“We had an issue in qualifying which left us on the back foot a bit for race one, but I battled hard to get up to third on the road,” he said. “Unfortunately, there were a few judicial decisions that didn’t fall in our favour which dropped me back to P6, and we missed the reverse grid as a result.
“We’d done the hard work in the first race so that was a bit of a kick in the teeth, but I knew we had the pace to come forwards in race two. I wanted to keep my nose clean, and it was a really enjoyable battle with Dan; he put up a good fight.
“I managed to get ahead of him and then tried a move on Will, but he forced me onto the grass and I had to back out to avoid an incident. That was a bit of a dicey moment and from there, I brought the car home to get the points on the board.
“It’s very tight amongst us all in the points and hopefully we have a strong run at Knockhill to bring the gap down at the front.”
