Matteo Cairoli is set for the big one as the FIA WEC Championship heads this week to the famous eight-mile Circuit de la Sarthe for the fourth round of the season. The Italian racing driver returns to Le Mans 24 Hours for the fifth consecutive time, hoping to improve on the fourth LMGTE Am position he earnt last year following he claimed the class pole position in 2018 and 2019.
Like in the previous 2021 races, Matteo lines up alongside Team Project 1 team-mates Riccardo Pera and Egidio Perfetti, sharing duties in the #56 Porsche 911 RSR. Fresh from finishing fourth the 6 Hours of Monza held last July, Cairoli takes the fifth place in the standings 14 points shy of the top.
“It is my fifth time racing the 24 Hours of Le Mans and I’m really looking forward to it as it’s one of the coolest events of the year”, Cairoli said. “Although enduring a problem in the first session of the last Sunday’s Test Day, we prepared well the car. I’m feeling really confident to fight for top positions.”
After a two-day break, action at Le Mans will resume tomorrow with the first free practice and qualifying sessions. Free practice 3 and the Hyperpole are scheduled on Thursday. The 89th edition of Le Mans 24 Hours will start on Saturday at 4 pm.
