Wright Motorsports Ready for GT-only Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park

The competitors of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship have a short but important race weekend in store in Lakeville, Connecticut at Lime Rock Park. This weekend, Wright Motorsports returns to the Northwest corner of the state to visit the 1.474-mile track, at which the team’s Porsche 911 GT3 R will compete with drivers Ryan Hardwick and Jan Heylen in the two-hour and forty-minute race on Saturday.

Last year’s WeatherTech race at the short road course underwent lengthy delays due to weather conditions, hampering the team’s charge through the field. The race ended 70 minutes early before many of the closing-stint drivers were able to turn any laps. This weekend’s event will again host warm temperatures and possibly rainy conditions, hitting the high 80s on both Friday and Saturday, with a 50% chance of rain on Saturday.

Neither Hardwick nor Heylen raced in the WeatherTech sprint race in 2021, however, the pair did compete the same weekend in the supporting race in the Michelin Pilot Challenge. Racing the No. 16 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport, the pair performed beautifully, starting from 21st position to finish third, bringing the eventual championship winners to the GS class points lead.

This year’s festivities will feature a short race weekend, with only two days of on-track activities for the GTD-class racing squad. On-track sessions will begin Friday morning with two opening practice sessions and conclude with a 15-minute qualifying session. With the grid set based on the order of their fastest qualifying lap times, WeatherTech competitors will start race day off with a warm-up session at 9:05 AM ET on Saturday, July 16, followed by the race start at 3:10 PM ET.

DRIVER QUOTES

Ryan Hardwick

I’m looking forward to racing at Lime Rock Park. This race is always super fun because you never really get a break in the action. The lap is so short, you are always pushing. The Porsche has historically been strong here, so we hope to have a good pace here and gain some strong points toward the championship.

Jan Heylen

All races are fun, but this one is extra fun! It’s a short track with lots of action, and I’m really looking forward to it. Lime Rock always makes for a good race, with lots of overtaking in front of the best fans.

Porsche Carrera Cup North America

While the Wright Motorsports WeatherTech program competes in Lakeville, Connecticut, the team’s Porsche Carrera Cup program will be racing north of the border on the streets of Toronto for the Honda Indy Toronto in support of the NTT IndyCar Series. Varun Choksey (Pro class, No. 13 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup) and John Goetz (Am class, No. 57 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup) will compete in the pair of 40-minute races for the single-make series on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
