Porsche Carrera Cup Australia points leader Warren Luff has returned to the top by winning Race 2 at the Formula 1® Australian Grand Prix, while newcomer Roger Lago scored his first Elite Class victory.
Luff, who placed second to Steven Richards in Race 1, drove to the lead at the start and maintained this position until the chequered flag, holding a comfortable distance to rivals Richards and third placed Nick Foster to the finish.
Luff is now equal in points with Richards for the round and 30 points clear in the season’s point standings.
“We probably didn’t have the car that we needed late in the race yesterday; it was a little bit hard to hang on to Richards, who had good car speed right throughout the race. We made a few changes overnight and I was much happier with the balance of the car throughout the race,” said Luff.
Craig Baird placed fourth for the race, spending most of the race unchallenged, finishing ahead of Sam Power, Nick McBride, Michael Almond and Duvashen Padayachee in eighth – the quartet battling for position the majority of the race.
New to Carrera Cup in 2014, Lago placed ninth and was the top placed Elite Class driver, pleased with his top 10 performance.
“I nearly got into trouble at the first corner with the spin but I went the right way and missed everything. After that I really drove on my own, to be honest,” said Lago.
“The guys behind me didn’t catch me and the guys in front were too quick. I haven’t been here before and it’s my first year in Carrera Cup so I’m pretty happy.”
Renee Gracie scored a career best result of 10th after battling with Stephen Grove and James Bergmuller, who placed 11th and 12th, while Tony Bates and Marc Cini also had a close tussle during the race to finish 13th and 14th, respectively.
Brenton Ramsay placed 15th from Dean Koutsoumidis, Adrian Mastronardo, Maurie Pickering and Ash Samadi in 19th, who was dropped four positions in the results after contact with Ramsay.
Michael Patrizi and Shae Davies failed to finish after contact at the opening corner, as did Shane Smollen due to rear end damage incurred after late race contact.
Porsche Carrera Cup Australia will hold its final race of the Albert Park round on Sunday at 2:05pm.
