For over 40 years, the Long Beach Grand Prix has been the hottest ticket for Southern California motorsports enthusiasts and The Racers Group (TRG) will be on hand to to mark this 43rd edition of America’s number one street race as it pursues a top step of the podium at this milestone event.
Representing TRG on the historic 1.9 mile street circuit in the #991 Porsche 911 GT3 R are veteran Porsche drivers Wolf Henzler and Jan Heylen, who bring success and experience to the 11-turn course that has become a staple on the IMSA calendar and features the powerful GTD class this year.
“A street course is a big challenge for everybody – when you’re exiting the turns, you may slide or you oversteer and you get close to the wall or almost touch it,” observes Henzler, a Porsche Works Driver who has raced both the 911 RSR and the 911 GT3 R in 2016, and will contribute his well-honed skills as a Factory Driver as well as his Porsche racing knowledge to kick off the team’s GTD campaign at the famous Streets of Long Beach. “For me, it’s very special to race in the streets of Long Beach – it’s always a great atmosphere!”
Jan Heylen is considered a Porsche Specialist and one of the strongest Silver Drivers on the current racing circuit. The Belgian’s race experience extends far beyond Porsche, however, with early success in Renault Eurocup, Formula Ford, Formula Three Euroseries, Formula 3000 and the Champ Car World Series.
“Long Beach is a special place for me, when I moved to the US 11 years ago, Long Beach was my first ever race in the US and my first race in ChampCar and walked away with a P8 finish,” says Heylen. “Many of my best friends live in California, so I love coming here. In general, there’s nothing I love more than street courses, they are the ultimate challenge for the drivers, staying with the track as it gets better every session, not making any mistakes.”
