Following its annual overseas visit to Monza last month, Motorbase Performance heads to Oulton Park in Cheshire for rounds 7 and 8 of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship as the single-marque series returns to the UK (June 9/10).
Two podium finishes for rookie Dan Vaughan in Italy sees the New-Forest based driver placed just 11 points off the current Pro-Am Championship leader, with a single point separating him from second. With the championship reaching its halfway mark this weekend, the category battle is set to get even closer as the racing resumes at Oulton Park.
“I really enjoyed Monza;” commented Team Principal David Bartrum. “It was a great result for Dan and we enjoyed some good racing, but it’s nice to be back on the TOCA package. It feels more like home.
“Oulton Park is a great circuit for the Porsche and I’m looking forward to seeing what Dan can do there. He’s progressing nicely. Monza was another step forward with two podiums and I think he’s maturing at the right time, just as we come to the halfway point in the season. It’s important for him to maintain his pace and concentration and to get another strong result this weekend to keep the pressure on the Pro-Am leaders.”
“I love Oulton Park;” added Dan Vaughan. “I think it’s one of the most exciting tracks we visit. I haven’t been there for a few years but I’ve raced there before and always gone well. I think it’s one of our strongest tracks because of its quick nature. Oulton is really technical circuit; especially the mountain section and you don’t have to do a lot wrong to have a big one there. It’ll be interesting to see where everyone stands at the end of the weekend.
“I think there will be quite a big gap between the fastest and the slowest;” added the AE Graphics-backed racer. “The first half of the season has been a good start for us. I didn’t really know where we’d be but I think we’ve done really well. We just need to keep closing the points gap now.”
This weekend also marks the start of Motorbase’s long-term expansion plans for the Carrera Cup. Having taken delivery of a second Porsche 911 ‘Type 991’ GT3 Cup earlier this week, the Kent-based squad will be displaying the newest edition to its stable at the Cheshire circuit, which is expected to debut at Snetterton when the championship returns from its summer break.
“Our plan for the second half of the season is to expand our foray in the Carrera Cup;” explained the Team Boss. “Our new car will be on display at Oulton Park with the plan to run it for the remaining rounds. We’re looking forward to going back to a two car team and see that as a natural progression and another step towards going back to where we used to be.
“Our goal is to get back to running three cars next year and this is the first stage in that plan. We’re in talks with a few drivers about the second car and I hope to be able to make an announcement very soon.”
Rounds 7 and 8 of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB get underway Oulton Park in Cheshire on June 9/10. Qualifying for round 7 takes place at 13:05 – 13:35 on Saturday 9th June before the weekend’s opening race at 17:10.
