De Angelis Fastest During Porsche GT3 Cup Canada Day 1 at Trois-Rivières

If Roman De Angelis is looking to mount a comeback in the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama championship standings, he’s on the right track following Friday’s activities at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières (GP3R) in Québec.

The Platinum class rookie laid down a flyer of one minute, 4.171 seconds (137.295 kph; 85.311 mph) during the final minutes of Practice 2 to top the overall charts of the day in the No. 78 Mark Motors Racing Porsche. De Angelis’ time was just .122 seconds quicker than teammate Zach Robichon in the No. 98 Porsche.

This weekend’s Porsche GT3 Cup Canada doubleheader is crucial for De Angelis, who sits second in the championship standings 32 points behind Robichon. Given the day’s results, however, the 17-year-old is cautiously optimistic.

“We put new tires on so obviously that was a huge help,” said De Angelis. “We looked over some of Zach’s data earlier and I could see where I was a bit slower and just built from that. I improved braking a little bit, that’s where most of the time is, and just rolling speed with new tires. It’s a good start, I think, and a good qualifying simulation, so we know what to expect tomorrow.”

Remo Ruscitti in the No. 96 OpenRoad Racing Porsche was the only other driver in the Porsche GT3 Cup Canada field to break the 1:05 mark on the time charts, posting a lap of 1:04.750 in Practice 2.

Porsche GT3 Cup Canada kicks off early on Saturday at GP3R with a 20-minute qualifying session at 8:30 a.m. ET. The first of two races on the weekend goes green on Saturday at 2:45 p.m. ET and can be streamed live on IMSA.tv.

Additionally on Saturday, fans onsite at GP3R are invited to meet the drivers during the Porsche GT3 Cup Canada autograph session, scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at the Yokohama Tire Service Center.

Race 2 is set for Sunday morning at 10 a.m. and can also be streamed live on IMSA.tv.
