The Pirelli Trophy West USA heads to Northern California this week, staging the penultimate event of the season at one of the most famous road course circuits in America, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.
The series, which has staged primarily stand-alone race weekends this season, joins the premier American sports car series, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, for the two-race Round 6 of the season. Two races will be conducted on the weekend, with each race combining the GT3 Class (featuring the Diamond Class for 2010-2013 iteration of Porsche 911 GT3 Cup machines and the Platinum Class for 2014-2016 generation Porsche 911 GT3 Cup machines) and the GT4 Class (for the Porsche Cayman ClubSport Trophy GT4 and GT4 Cup MR iterations, in Bronze and Silver Class).
The Diamond and Platinum Classes have each seen drivers take command of the championship standings. Newark, California’s Kevin Woods (TruSpeed Autosport) leads the Diamond Class with victories in eight of the 10 races this season, and Sean McAlister (Competition Motorsports) has scored an impressive nine wins in Platinum. Competition Motorsports’ Michael Zuieback leads Dr. Preston Calvert in the Diamond Masters standings, while Laura Ely (Black Sheep Racing) has a solid hold on the Bronze Class title chase with five wins. Chris Bellomo, driving for Sonoma-based The Racer’s Group, owns seven victories on the season in the Silver Class.
Diamond Class championship leader Woods considers Laguna Seca one of his two home tracks. His familiarity shows in his results in the series over the past two years: six podiums in six races, including four victories.
”I grew up right in between Laguna Seca and Sonoma, so both are my home tracks,” said Woods. “I took my first racing school there, the Skip Barber Racing School, and I drove in their winter series in 2007. I did a season of the Formula Car Challenge and won the championship, but with the market crash, I decided to focus on work for the next four years! Eventually, I started doing some karting and being a big Porsche fan, I wanted to try a Porsche race car. I took a two-day course and I was hooked. I started racing again in 2014, and joined the Pirelli Trophy West USA two years ago in the Clubsport, then moved up to the Diamond Class last year. I’m looking forward to watching the IMSA drivers on track throughout the weekend so I can get more information on how to drive the track.
“But I love Laguna Seca; the way it flows, especially in the Turn 6-Corkscrew-Turns 9 and 10 section. You really have to put it all together to get a quick time. I’m looking forward to the weekend, especially with all the family and friends who are coming. And you can count on it never being too hot – except the action on track!”
WeatherTech Raceway CEO Tim McGrane welcomes the series’ return to the iconic Northern California track.
“The Pirelli Trophy West USA is a great addition to the outstanding racing lineup this weekend,” said McGrane. “Hosting the single-marque Porsche series again at one of our major events is especially fitting during a season where the Porsche racing heritage is so prominent at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, which will be the home of Rennsport Reunion VI in September that concludes Porsche’s yearlong 70th anniversary celebration.”
Competent Motorsport President Greg Franz looks forward to the opportunity to showcase the series in front of the Bay Area’s sports car fans.
“Our drivers and staff are excited to be participating at Weather Tech Raceway Laguna Seca with IMSA this weekend,” said Franz. “To be on this stage with this great series, and with some of the most exciting drivers in the world, is a real pleasure. As this race is our next to last event for 2018, our 38 drivers are ready to attack and appreciate one of the world-class venues in all of motorsports. If you have the chance to attend and watch our group of drivers driving five different Porsche platforms, from GT4 Cayman Clubsport Cups to 991.2 GT3 Cup cars, you will witness some of the best privateer drivers in the United States. Our staff is thrilled with the quality of racing our drivers bring to all of the venues we have driven at this 2018 season. Come out and enjoy a wonderful racing weekend at Laguna Seca and enjoy the RACING!”
The Pirelli Trophy West USA series will take the green flag at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca at 5:45 p.m. Saturday and 10:20 a.m. Sunday (Pacific Time), with a pair of 40-minute flag-to-flag races.
